Op 16 september 2016 brengt Sayeed zijn dochtertje van bijna twee naar het ziekenhuis. Ze is gevallen en er sijpelt bloed uit haar vagina. Zijn vrouw Halawa wacht thuis met hun baby van zeven weken op nieuws. Het is het begin van een nachtmerrie voor dit stel, dat afkomstig is uit Oost-Afrika maar al jaren in Ierland woont. Want in het ziekenhuis rijst het vermoeden dat hun dochtertje genitaal verminkt is. Terwijl de kinderbescherming wordt ingeschakeld en de politie een huiszoeking doet, proberen de verbijsterde Sayeed en Halawa uit te leggen dat ze onschuldig zijn. Tevergeefs. De pers duikt erop en bestempelt ze nog voor er sprake is van een officiële aanklacht als ‘barbaarse slagers’. In de zesdelige serie First Conviction van RTÉ, de Ierse publieke omroep, wordt deze intens trieste zaak gereconstrueerd.
A new mockumentary series from RTÉ Documentary On One and RTÉ Drama On One. Written by Colm Tobin and Aidan O’Donovan, this black comedy is set in a sprawling ghost estate – a failed housing project called 30 Acres. It’s Christmastime at 30 Acres and Glenn, Iseult and Holly are hiding out in Glenn’s bomb shelter with their hostage, Sean Granite. Alistair Crowe plans to strike a deal with Holly, sidelining the others, so that he can advance his plan to sell the 30 Acres estate. If he can secure the release of Sean Granite, his government contacts will support him to establish a prison on the site.
However this will depend on Sean – and Sean is a much changed man after his period of captivity at the hands of the 30 Acres Says No campaign.
