In het kort houdt die wet in dat het toegestaan is dodelijk geweld te gebruiken wanneer iemand zich rechtmatig ergens bevindt en het gevoel heeft dat zijn of haar leven bedreigd wordt. Dit was het geval in 2023 op Camp Swamp Road in South Carolina, waar Scott Spivey werd doodgeschoten na een verkeersruzie. De schutter beriep zich op de Stand Your Ground-wet, en de zaak werd al snel gesloten. De zus van Spivey ontdekt echter belastende audio-opnames, die corruptie binnen de politie en de werkelijke intentie van de dader aan het licht brengen.
